'I may know a thing or two' - Bruno Fernandes opens up on Cristiano Ronaldo's Man United future

Bruno Fernandes has been discussing Cristiano Ronaldo's future at Manchester United.

Ronaldo was benched for the visit of Liverpool on Monday night, with Erik ten Hag opting to start Marcus Rashford up top before Anthony Martial came on to spearhead the attack early in the second half. While the 37-year-old watched on from the bench, Fernandes played a starring role alongside his teammates in an impressive victory over Jurgen Klopp's team.

Jadon Sancho gave the Reds the lead in the first half with a cool finish. Rashford would double the advantage after half-time, breaking the offside trap to fire past Alisson.

Mohamed Salah pulled a goal back for the Merseysiders but it would prove to be only a consolation. At full-time, Fernandes, who had captained United against their rivals, was asked about Ronaldo's future at the Theatre of Dreams by Eleven Sports Portugal.

He replied: "There is a lot of speculation, but there is no one better than Cristiano to talk about it. I may know a thing or two, but I won't be the one to say it.

"Cristiano is calm. He worked well this week and did the work he has been doing, which he will continue to do so. For now, he is a United player. I don't know if he will leave or if he will not leave.

"As he said, he will speak soon and they will have time to hear his words and what he has to say. I don't think anyone has shown so far that there was no interest in Cristiano not staying.

"He can continue at a high level and give us a lot of goals but it's his decision. We have to respect what he wants to do, whatever he wants to do.

"If he's going to stay, we'll be happy about it; if he's going to leave because he thinks it's best for him, I'll be personally happy for him. The most important thing is that he's okay, playing at the highest level and making our country proud."

Barcelona stance on accepting two stars for Frenkie de Jong as Chelsea start negotiations

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong is proving hot property this summer, though Chelsea won’t be able to strike a deal for the Dutchman by including Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso in the deal. The pair have been cited as transfer targets of the La Liga outfit previously.

Manchester United have been trying to secure the signature of De Jong all summer long, though negotiations have stalled on what seems like a weekly basis. Numerous reasons have been given for the Red Devils not being able to get a deal over the line, such as the player wanting to remain at Barcelona and also because he is waiting for a major payment from his employers.

But Chelsea have now opened negotiations with the Catalan giants and believe that they will be able to bring the midfielder to the Premier League. Thomas Tuchel’s chances of landing De Jong are also boosted due to Barcelona’s interest in Azpilicueta and Alonso, but Sport report that it is unlikely that the pair will be directly involved in the deal.

They say that it would ‘be less beneficial’ for Barca to accept such a deal due to La Liga’s salary limits. Therefore, they will be demanding a fee in the region of £66million.

De Jong would add a touch of class to Chelsea’s already well-stocked midfield, though it could come at the expense of some of their fringe players. Questions have been raised about whether Billy Gilmour, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Conor Gallagher will be included in Tuchel’s plans next season, and the arrival of former Ajax star De Jong would push them further down the pecking order.

Barca have made it no secret that they are targeting Chelsea’s Spanish duo, having already signed Andreas Christensen from the Blues earlier this summer when his contract at Stamford Bridge expired. The Blues are in talks to sign Brighton defender Marc Cucurella, which would cover for the departure of Alonso.

However, club captain Azpilicueta may be harder to replace. Speaking about Barca’s approach of the 32-year-old earlier this summer, Tuchel said: “We don’t think so much about other clubs. The focus is on us and what we need. I said that to him and I say it to you that I understand on a personal and a career level.

“But I am not only in this role to give him what he wants. I am a manager for Chelsea who wants to do what’s best for Chelsea. He doesn’t like it but he understands. It is tough for him because the other club is permanently on him. On September 1 when things calm down, then he can play on his highest level.”

Jealous Groom Sentenced To 18 Years In Prison For Beating His New Bride To Death On Their Wedding Day

A groom has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for beating his new bride to death.

The tragedy happened on their wedding day in front of shocked guests, Dailymail reported.

Stepan Dolgikh, 35, beat wife Oksana Poludentseva, 36, to death then dumped her body in a ravine in Novosibirsk, Russia.

The unrepentant killer told a court that he believed his new bride had been cheating on him.

Dolgikh had a previous conviction for murder but the wife – who got to know him while he was in prison as a penpal – believed she could tame him.

Witnesses said he started kicking and punching mother-of-one Poludentseva after becoming ‘jealous’ of her communication with another guest at their alcohol-fuelled wedding party in a private house in Chik village.

He accused his new wife of ‘behaving incorrectly’, it was alleged.

Chief investigator Kirill Petrushin said: ‘He began to punch and kick her outside the house.’

He continued to attack her inside the house.

‘He grabbed her by the hair, hit her, pushed her out into the street, where he also continued to strike her body and head.’When she appeared lifeless‘he dumped her into a nearby ravine’.

The incident was several hours after the couple had exchanged vows at their wedding.

Other guests were reportedly too scared to intervene but they called law enforcement.

The groom was detained at the scene by the Russian National Guard. Dolgikh confessed to the killing, said Petrushin, senior regional detective of the Russian Investigative Committee.

‘He beat her for a long time, in front of witnesses, and struck her vital organs – in the torso and head,’he said.

He ‘fully admitted guilt during the investigation’ but failed to repent, he said.

‘He was jealous of her with one of the male guests,’said Petrushin.

‘It seemed to her husband that she had behaved incorrectly, which caused a scandal. All the rest were afraid of him, so they tried to intervene, but were rebuffed.’

A friend said:‘She truly loved him, and was waiting for release.’

The man had previous convictions for murder and robbery, but Poludentseva believed she could help him mend his ways.

‘The deceased woman knew about his criminal record,’said Petrushin.

‘They met while he was serving a sentence in prison for his previous crimes.’

He added:‘She did not think that while drinking alcohol or just in a fit of anger, a person like this may go over the limit and commit a serious crime.’

EAGLE FLOWN Man Utd legend Wayne Rooney lands shock Christian Benteke transfer as striker joins DC United from Crystal Palace

DC UNITED manager Wayne Rooney has signed Christian Benteke from Crystal Palace.

Palace have announced Benteke's departure and confirmed he is joining the MLS outfit to link up with Manchester United legend Rooney.

The Washington Post reports that the striker will become DC United's all-time best paid player.

The Belgium international's salary is expected to eclipse Rooney's £2.9m per-year wages he was on when he played for the club between 2018 and 2020.

However, the 31-year-old will need a work visa and that process may take at least two weeks.

DC's match against the Philadelphia Union on August 20 may be the earliest realistic date for the Belgian's debut.

Palace Chairman Steve Parish praised Benteke's contribution to the club and wished him the best in his next challenge.

Parish issued the following statement: “Christian has played a crucial role in this club’s Premier League journey, making an immediate impact after signing and playing a central role in the squad ever since.

"He’s someone I’ve enjoyed a great relationship with and he’s shown incredible loyalty staying with the club when he could easily have taken other options.

"We all wish him all the very best with the next stage of his career.”

Benteke joined the Premier League in 2012 when he signed with Aston Villa from Genk.

The centre-forward sored 49 goals and bagged 12 assists in 101 appearances before moving to Liverpool in 2015.

The Belgian struggled to stand out at Anfield with only 10 goals and six assists in 42 matches.

He left a year later for Palace where he netted 37 times in 177 games in his six years at Selhurst Park.

IN THE RON Gary Neville ‘disappointed’ in Cristiano Ronaldo as Man Utd legend slams ‘unpalatable’ transfer saga

GARY NEVILLE believes Cristiano Ronaldo should STAY at Old Trafford and act as a leader to Manchester United's young players as he continues to seek a move away.

The 37-year-old is keen to quit the Red Devils in his quest to play Champions League football.

After missing the Red Devils' pre-season tour of Asia and Australia due to "family reasons", Ronaldo returned to action against Rayo Vallecano last week.

But he left ten minutes before the final whistle in the friendly clash - during which he was hooked at half-time - with fans believing it was a last-ditch attempt at forcing a move away.

Boss Erik ten Hag was left fuming by the incident, calling the stunt "unacceptable".

Neville recently called on United to flog Ronaldo for the good of the club.

And speaking on Sky Sports after Arsenal's 2-0 win at Crystal Palace on Friday night, Neville was critical of his former team-mate.

Neville said: "I hope he stays, but I'm a little bit disappointed in him to be honest.

"Would it be too much to ask him to come out to do an interview to clear things up and tell us what he’s thinking and what’s actually happening.

"Manchester United shouldn't be in the position, I feel it's a little bit unpalatable."

"He doesn't want to be distracted all the time by the star player - 'Is he going to stay, is he going to go?'"

Despite uncertainty surround his future, Ronaldo could still start against Brighton on Sunday with striker Anthony Martial ruled out due to injury.

MART 'N SOUL Crystal Palace 0 Arsenal 2: Gabriel Martinelli leads new-look Gunners to opening day win as debutants set the tone

 Gabriel Martinelli’s 20th minute header and a l

ate Marc Guehi own goal were enough to ensure there was no repeat of last year’s opening day embarrassment at Brentford.

And while this backs to the wall triumph won’t exactly have the title contenders quaking in their boots, at least it proved that Mikel Arteta’s youngsters have grown some backbone.

April’s 3-0 capitulation at Selhurst Park proved the spark for the dramatic late season collapse which ultimately cost Arsenal Champions League qualification.

But last night they showed their mettle as they stood tall to defy up and at ‘em Palace.

Arteta has been widely derided for the motivational tactics revealed by the All or Nothing documentary which have earned comparisons to Ted Lasso and David Brent.

But he clearly got his team talk spot on this time as his young scrappers rolled up their sleeves to grind out the victory which leaves them top of the table for at least a few hours.

And no-one epitomised that endeavour more than Gabriel Jesus, the Brazilian street fighter who ran himself into the ground to ensure his Arsenal career got off to  the best possible start.

With seven goals in five pre-season games, Jesus has been in scintillating form since completing his £45million move from Manchester City.

And it didn’t take him long to find his feet in his first competitive game for his new club as he danced through three tackles to set up a glorious fourth minute chance for Martinelli.
